ENTRANCE HYMN     Come, Thou Almighty King     #522

  Come, thou almighty King,
help us thy name to sing;
help us to praise;
Father all-glorious,
o’er all victorious,
come and reign over us,
Ancient of Days.

2   Come, thou incarnate Word,
gird on thy mighty sword;
our prayer attend.
Come and thy people bless,
and give thy word success,
and let thy righteousness
on us descend.

3   Come, holy Comforter,
thy sacred witness bear
in this glad hour!
Thou, who almighty art,
now rule in ev’ry heart,
and ne’er from us depart,
Spirit of pow’r.

4   To thee, great One in Three,
eternal praises be
hence evermore!
Thy sov’reign majesty
may we in glory see,
and to eternity
love and adore.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

God our creator, the resurrection of your Son offers life to all the peoples of earth. By your Holy Spirit, kindle in us the fire of your love, empowering our lives for service and our tongues for praise, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

FIRST READING     ACTS 2:1-21

When the day of Pentecost had come, [the apostles] were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.” But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning.

No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: ‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ ”

PSALM     104:24-34, 35b

How manifold are your works, O Lord! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.

Yonder is the sea, great and wide, with its swarms too many to number, living things both small and great.

There go the ships to and fro, and Leviathan, which you made for the sport of it.

All of them look to you to give them their food in due season.

Send forth your Spirit and renew the face of the earth
You give it to them; they gather it; you open your hand, and they are filled with good things.

When you hide your face, they are terrified; when you take away their breath, they die and return to their dust.

You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; and so you renew the face of the earth.

May the glory of the Lord endure forever; Lord, rejoice in all your works. Send forth your Spirit and renew the face of the earth.

You look at the earth and it trembles; you touch the mountains and they smoke.

I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will praise my God while I have my being.

May these words of mine please God. I will rejoice in the Lord.

Bless the Lord, O my soul. Hallelujah!

Send forth your Spirit and renew the face of the earth.

SECOND READING     ROMANS 8:14-17

For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Alleluia. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in us the fire of your love. Alleluia.

GOSPEL     JOHN 14:8-17 [25-27]

Philip said to [Jesus,] “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it. “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. [“I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.”]

HYMN of the DAY     Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart #486

1   Spirit of God, descend upon my heart;
wean it from earth, through all its pulses move
stoop to my weakness, strength to me impart,
and make me love you as I ought to love.

2   I ask no dream, no prophet ecstasies,
no sudden rending of the veil of clay,
no angel visitant, no op’ning skies;
but take the dimness of my soul away.

3   Have you not bid me love you, God and King;
all, all your own, soul, heart, and strength, and mind?
I see your cross; there teach my heart to cling.
Oh, let me seek you and, oh, let me find!

4   Teach me to love you as your angels love,
one holy passion filling all my frame:
the baptism of the heav’n-descended dove,
my heart an altar, and your love the flame.

PRAYERS of INTERCESSION

Set free from captivity to sin and death, we pray to the God of resurrection for the church, people in need, and all of creation.

A brief silence.

Holy Living Moving Spirit, burst open locked doors and lead Christians out of churches into the world to proclaim your mighty deeds. Direct our words and actions, trusting the Advocate abiding in and among us. God, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Holy Living Moving Spirit, feed and care for creatures that hide from us yet contribute to the vibrancy of creation. Train us to interact with nature from a place of wonder, awe, and reverence. God, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Holy Living Moving Spirit, send mediators to places where language barriers prevent understanding. Give justice and mercy to those who seek it. Bless the work of translators, interpreters, and teachers. Promote compassion for the sake of those longing for true freedom and peace. God, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Holy Living Moving Spirit, comfort all who live in fear, in disbelief or suffer in any way (especially those on our prayer list). Remind them that your Spirit has made them your children and that they are never far from your glory. God, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Holy Living Moving Spirit, guide the work of bishops, pastors, missionaries, and other ministers of the gospel. Foster our relationships with partner synods and local ministry partners so our visions and actions are Spirit-led. God, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Holy Living Moving Spirit, gather your people across regions, nations, and lands. Root our common life in the life, death, and resurrection of Christ, and by your Spirit bind us together with all the saints who have gone before us. God, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

In your mercy, Holy Living Moving Spirit of God, respond to these prayers, and renew us through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen

INVITATION to COMMUNION

The risen Christ dwells with us here. All who are hungry, all who are thirsty, come.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

We give you thanks, generous God, for in this bread and cup we have tasted the new heaven and earth where hunger and thirst are no more. Send us from this table as witnesses to the resurrection, that through our lives, all may know life in Jesus’ name. Amen.

BLESSING

God, the Author of life, Christ, the living Cornerstone, and the life-giving Spirit of adoption, [☩] bless you now and forever. Amen.

CLOSING HYMN     O Living Bread from Heaven     #197

1   O living Bread from heaven,
how well you feed your guest!
The gifts that you have given
have filled my heart with rest.
Oh, wondrous food of blessing,
>oh, cup that heals our woes!
My heart, this gift possessing,
with praises overflows!

2   My Lord, you here have led me
within your holiest place,
and here yourself have fed me
with treasures of your grace;
for you have freely given
what earth could never buy,
the bread of life from heaven,

that now I shall not die.

3   You gave me all I wanted;
this food can death destroy.
>And you have freely granted
the cup of endless joy.
My Lord, I do not merit
the favor you have shown,
and all my soul and spirit
bow down before your throne.

4   Lord, grant me then, thus strengthened
with heav’nly food, while here
my course on earth is lengthened,
to serve with holy fear.
And when you call my spirit
to leave this world below,
I enter, through your merit,
where joys unmingled flow.

DISMISSAL

Alleluia! Christ is risen. Christ is risen indeed. Alleluia!

Go in peace. Tell what God has done. Thanks be to God.

Messiah’s community garden could use your help throughout the summer. If you are not familiar with the Messiah’s community garden, it is located on the rental property next to the church, with the wooden picket fence. The garden has provided vegetables to local food banks since 2015. If you have garden tools and gloves, please feel free to bring them along.

Keep in mind that the garden is a great place to honor social distancing, while serving your community. If you would like to be a regular or occasional “garden helper” please contact Beth Hogan at 717-896-2269. Thank you.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS FOR JUNE

5 – Day of Pentecost

12 – The Holy Trinity

LET US PRAY

Prayer knits the waiting, expectant community together. It isn’t just for those being prayed for. It’s an act of faith where others are lifted up and entrusted to God.

NEW PRAYER REQUESTS

Please fill out prayer request cards from now on and provide your name, the person for whom you are requesting prayer, their contact information and a few details.

Continuing to add names verbally will lead to persons being left off the prayer list. And without written notes, the pastor cannot remember/connect names with specific needs for prayer.

Filling out a card will allow the pastor to make contact, initiate pastoral care, and request permission to place a person’s name on the prayer list. Alternatively, you may email or text as long as you provide the same details. Following this plan will assure consistency, improve communication and help those for whom we pray. Please email concerns and/or requests including your name and theirs, contact information, and a few specifics to: elsiebbrody@gmail.com  Or text (443)-974-5558. Thank you.
