Twenty-Second Sunday After Pentecost

ANNOUNCEMENTS

PRELUDE

BRIEF ORDER OF CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Most merciful God, we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his Son to die for us and, for his sake, forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Father, Son and Holy Spirit, by your presence, renew and direct our hearts. Keep the end of all things ever present in our minds. Inspire us to lead a holy life until we are present before you, one God, three in one. Amen.

FIRST READING    JOB 19:23-27a

“O that my words were written down! O that they were inscribed in a book! O that with an iron pen and with lead they were engraved on a rock forever! For I know that my vindicator lives and that in the end he will stand upon the earth; and after my skin has been destroyed, then in my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall see on my side, and my eyes shall behold, and not another.”

PSALM    17:1-9

Hear a just cause, O Lord; give heed to my cry; listen to my prayer, which does not come from lying lips.

Let my vindication come forth from your presence; let your eyes be fixed on justice.

Examine my heart, visit me by night, melt me down; you will find no impurity in me.

I have not regarded what others do; at the word of your lips I have avoided the ways of the violent.

My footsteps hold fast to your well-worn path; and my feet do not slip.

I call upon you, O God, for you will answer me; incline your ear to me and hear my words.

Show me your marvel-ous lovingkindness, O Savior of those who take refuge at your right hand from those who rise against them.

Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me under the shadow of your wings,

from the wicked who assault me, from my deadly enemies who surround me.

SECOND READING     2 THESSALONIANS 2:1-5, 13-17

As to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we beg you, brothers and sisters, not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as though from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord is already here. Let no one deceive you in any way, for that day will not come unless the rebellion comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one destined for destruction. He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, declaring himself to be God. Do you not remember that I told you these things when I was still with you? But we must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the first fruits for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth. For this purpose he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter. Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and through grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope, comfort your hearts and strengthen them in every good work and word.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

🎶Alleluia, Lord to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia. Alleluia.

The Holy Gospel according to Saint Luke, the 20th chapter.

🎶Glory to you, O Lord.

GOSPEL  LUKE 20:27-38

Some Sadducees, those who say there is no resurrection, came to [Jesus] and asked him a question: “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies leaving a wife but no children, the man shall marry the widow and raise up children for his brother. Now there were seven brothers; the first married a woman and died childless; then the second and the third married her, and so in the same way all seven died childless. Finally the woman also died. In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had married her.” Jesus said to them, “Those who belong to this age marry and are given in marriage, but those who are considered worthy of a place in that age and in the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. Indeed, they cannot die anymore, because they are like angels and are children of God, being children of the resurrection. And the fact that the dead are raised Moses himself showed, in the story about the bush, where he speaks of the Lord as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Now he is God not of the dead but of the living, for to him all of them are alive.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

🎶Praise to you, O Christ.

HYMN of the DAY

Christ, the Life of All the Living  #97

PROFESSION of FAITH     Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He decended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life-everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS of INTERCESSION

Hear our just causes, O Lord; give heed to our prayers for the church, the world, and all who are in need. A brief silence.

God our Redeemer, examine the heart of the church, visit her, melt her down as to find no impurity. May it not regard what others do, but at the word of your lips, may she avoid ways of violence. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

God of life, keep the earth and its inhabitants as the apple of your eye; hide everything that calls this planet home under the shadow of your wings. Preserve them from the wicked who assault her and from deadly enemies upon her ground. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

God of justice, let your vindication come forth from your presence; let your eyes be fixed on justice. We give thanks for the service of veterans and pray for those needing support for wounds of any kind. Strengthen those charged with the governance and protection of vulnerable populations. Bring an end to war throughout the world. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

God who leads us to belief and truth, may our footsteps hold fast to your well-worn path so that our feet will not slip. You are always and already here. Nurture and support those who are unsteady in mind, unsafe in spirit, or unwell in body (especially those on our prayer list). Comfort those who suffer from exposure to traumatic events. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

God who gathers us together, we give thanks for each other, for the Holy Spirit and everyone who makes it possible to be church together. May we find joy in belonging as we grow in faith together. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

God of the saints, we give thanks for all who have died in faith and pray for those who never acquired it or seemed to lose it along their journey. Encourage us as we remember those awaiting your coming in glory. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

O Savior of those who take refuge in you, we call upon you to incline your ear, to hear our words and answer us according to your unfailing lovingkindness. We offer these and all our prayers to you, trusting in your grace through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

EXCHANGE OF PEACE

OFFERING

OFFERATORY

🎶Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with your free Spirit.

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
