ENTRANCE HYMN     God of Our Fathers     #567

1   God of our fathers, whose almighty hand
leads forth in beauty all the starry band
of shining worlds in splendor through the skies:
our grateful songs before your throne arise.

2   Your love divine has led us in the past;
in this free land by you our lot is cast;

oh, be our ruler, guardian, guide, and stay;
your word our law, your paths our chosen way.

3   From war’s alarms, from deadly pestilence,
make your strong arm our ever sure defense.
Your true religion in our hearts increase;
your bounteous goodness nourish us in peace.

4   Refresh your people on their toilsome way;
lead us from night to never-ending day;
fill all our lives with heav’n-born love and grace
until at last we meet before your face.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

O God, the Father of our Lord Jesus, you are the city that shelters us, the mother who comforts us. With your Spirit accompany us on our life’s journey, that we may spread your peace in all the world, through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

FIRST READING     ISAIAH 66:10-14

Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad for her, all you who love her; rejoice with her in joy, all you who mourn over her— that you may nurse and be satisfied from her consoling breast; that you may drink deeply with delight from her glorious bosom.

For thus says the Lord: I will extend prosperity to her like a river, and the wealth of the nations like an overflowing stream; and you shall nurse and be carried on her arm, and dandled on her knees. As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem. You shall see, and your heart shall rejoice; your bodies shall flourish like the grass; and it shall be known that the hand of the Lord is with his servants, and his indignation is against his enemies.

PSALM     66:1-9

Be joyful in God, all you lands; be joyful, all the earth.

Sing the glory of God’s name; sing the glory of God’s praise.

Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds! Because of your great strength your enemies cringe before you.

All the earth bows down before you, sings to you, sings out your name.”

Come now and see the works of God, how awesome are God’s deeds toward all people.

God turned the sea into dry land, so that they went through the water on foot, and there we rejoiced in God.

Ruling forever in might, God keeps watch over the nations; let no rebels exalt themselves.

Bless our God, you peoples; let the sound of praise be heard.

Our God has kept us among the living and has not allowed our feet to slip.

All the earth bows down before you and sings out your name.

SECOND READING     GALATIANS  6:[1-6] 7-16

My friends, if anyone is detected in a transgression, you who have received the Spirit should restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness. Take care that you yourselves are not tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way,  you will fulfill the law of Christ. For if those who are nothing think they are something, they deceive themselves. All must test their own work; then that work, rather than their neighbor’s work, will become a cause for pride. For all must carry their own loads. Those who are taught the word must share in all good things with their teacher. Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow. 8If you sow to your own flesh, you will reap corruption from the flesh; but if you sow to the Spirit, you will reap eternal life from the Spirit. So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up. So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those of the family of faith. See what large letters I make when I am writing in my own hand! It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that try to compel you to be circumcised—only that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. Even the circumcised do not themselves obey the law, but they want you to be circumcised so that they may boast about your flesh. May I never boast of anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision nor uncircumcision is anything; but a new creation is everything! As for those who will follow this rule—peace be upon them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION     ISAIAH 6:3

Alleluia. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; God’s glory fills the whole earth. Alleluia.

GOSPEL     LUKE 10:1-11, 16-20

After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go. He said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore, ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves. Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house!’ And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you. Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the laborer deserves to be paid. Do not move about from house to house. Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you; cure the sick who are there, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ But whenever you enter a town and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and say, ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off in protest against you. Yet know this: the kingdom of God has come near.’” “Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me, and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.” The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, in your name even the demons submit to us!” He said to them, “I watched Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning. See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

SERMON followed by Meditation

HYMN of the DAY     Spread, Oh, Spread, Almighty Word     #379

1   Spread, oh, spread, almighty Word,
spread the reign of God the Lord;
tell how his own Son he gave,
all from sin and death to save.

2   Tell of our Redeemer’s grace,
who, to save our human race
and to pay rebellion’s price,
gave himself as sacrifice.

3   Tell of God the Spirit giv’n
now to guide us on to heav’n,
strong and holy, just and true,
working both to will and do.

4   Lord of harvest, great and kind,
rouse to action heart and mind;
let the gath’ring nations all
see your light and heed your call.

PROFESSION of FAITH/APOSTLE’S CREED     Page 65

PRAYERS of INTERCESSION

United in Christ and guided by the Spirit, we pray for the church, the creation, and all in need. A brief silence.

Lord of the harvest, you send the church outside its walls to proclaim Christ’s new creation to all the world. Renew us as we carry out your mission of peace and healing. Guide, protect and sustain all who accompany your people, especially missionaries. God of grace, hear our prayer.

Creation, as designed, abounded with flowing waters and diverse creatures. Guide climate scientists as they develop and advocate ways to restore earth’s natural balance. Make those who would profit responsible for resources used. Inspire humanity to adopt lifestyles that protect and sustain the earth. God of grace, hear our prayer.

You guard the nations; let no leaders exalt themselves, but lift up the most vulnerable and work for the good of all. Send your Spirit to eradicate classism and inequity, violence and war, poverty and hunger. God of grace, hear our prayer.

You desire abundant life for all. As we celebrate Independence Day, renew upon this continent a sense of gratitude, the practice of generosity, and a persistence to insure freedom for everyone. God of grace, hear our prayer.

Mothering God, though you care for all people in need, like any good parent, you also require those capable of nourishing and providing for themselves to work. Support caregivers whose full-time jobs preclude them from outside employment. Help those who hunger find nourishment that’s good for them. Heal those who are sick (especially those on our prayer list).  and comfort all who are dying or grieving. God of grace, hear our prayer.

We give thanks for saints who once offered peace and healing to us, who proclaimed and demonstrated your kingdom here on earth. Help us continue their work and be faithful witnesses to your loving resurrected presence. God of grace, hear our prayer.

God of every time and place, in Jesus’ name and filled with your Holy Spirit, we entrust these spoken prayers and those in our hearts to your holy keeping. Amen.

PEACE

THE LORD’S PRAYER

POST COMMUNION PRAYER

You, O Lord, brought us as naked babies into the light of day, for nature’s laws always obey your commands. You nurse us with the spiritual milk of your Divine Word. You keep us alive with the solid food of the body of Jesus Christ, and you let us drink from the chalice of his life-giving blood, poured out to save the whole world.

BLESSING

You, O church, are a most noble assembly whose assistance comes from God. It is you in whom God lives. Let faith free from error rest upon you. Offer it in peace to every household, just as you have received it. Make welcome both friends and strangers as we love and serve the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

CLOSING HYMN     My Country, ‘Tis of Thee     #566

1   My country, ’tis of thee,
sweet land of liberty,
of thee I sing:
land where my fathers died,
land of the pilgrims’ pride,
from ev’ry mountainside
let freedom ring.

2   My native country, thee,
land of the noble free,
thy name I love;
I love thy rocks and rills,
thy woods and templed hills;
my heart with rapture thrills
like that above.

3   Let music swell the breeze,
and ring from all the trees
sweet freedom’s song;
let mortal tongues awake;
let all that breathe partake;
let rocks their silence break,
the sound prolong.

4   Our fathers’ God, to thee,
author of liberty,
to thee we sing:
long may our land be bright
with freedom’s holy light.
Protect us by thy might,
great God, our king.

DISMISSAL

Go in peace. Love your neighbor.

Thanks be to God.

Altar flowers at St Peter have been presented by Ross and Nicole Miller in memory of Lauren Spence.

Altar flowers at Messiah have been presented by Deb Thornberg in memory of Shirley Paul.

NEXT SUNDAY

Pastor Brody delights in welcoming Seth Roseman to the pulpit on July 10th. He’s an excellent scholar, active in ministry and a really nice guy. He and his wife, Patty were part of PB’s LSS Arthur Murray dance cohort, too. Please welcome him heartily.

BACK to SCHOOL CARNIVAL

Our church has been invited to participate in a free Back to School Carnival event being hosted at Uplift Community Church. The idea put forth by the Vision and Outreach Committee of Messiah is to offer a dartball game with prizes. Volunteers are needed to man the booth from 3-6pm on August 13th and also to help set up and tear down. If you are not already committed to help at the Enders Reunion, please consider helping out at the carnival. It’s a great opportunity to collaborate with partners within our ministerium, witness and minister to the community. Please let Pastor Brody know if you’re available asap. She’ll have to decline the invitation unless a few volunteers step up.

PERSONAL CARE KITS

When natural disasters strike or war drives families from their homes, as we see over and over in the news, our hearts ache with compassion.  But what can we do?

Making Lutheran World Relief (LWR) kits is a simple, tangible way to offer comfort to those suffering and express love to our neighbors in need.

Messiah ladies are again collecting personal care kits to be shipped to and distributed by Lutheran World Relief.   These kits provide the basic needs for personal hygiene.

Each kit includes the following items:

  • One light weight bath-size towel (52X27”), dark colors are recommended
  • 2 bars of bath-size soap (4-5oz each)
  • 1 adult toothbrush in the original packaging, or sealed in a business envelope—no plastic wrap
  • 1 study comb
  • 1 metal nail clipper

Please consider purchasing the needed items for one or more kits.  There are baskets at the front of the church for each item—no need to remove tags or wrappings. Please have your kit items to the church by September 18th.  We will be assembling the kits September 25th during the adult Sunday School hour. Thank you for participating in this LWR ministry!

2022 SCHOOL KITS

Each of the congregations of our conference has been asked to contribute items to make this project possible. Our two churches have been asked to provide 700  SPIRAL notebooks (70-sheet, wide- or college-ruled, approximately 8 x 10½”; no loose-leaf paper, please). Please consider donating notebooks for this project. Donation boxes will be located at each church in July. Thank you for your kindness!

MESSIAH SUNDAY SCHOOL SCHEDULE

On the second and fourth Sundays of each month, adults and youth will gather for Sunday School starting at 9:00am. Children’s Sunday School  will be offered during the 10am worship service at Messiah. On the second and fourth Sundays of each month, right after the children’s sermon, potty trained children ages 2 up to 5th grade will be escorted from the sanctuary by their teacher.

MESSIAH WORSHIP SCHEDULE

Starting June 19, Messiah will have worship service on the third Sunday during the summer months outdoors in St Peter Pavilion. This will continue in the months of June, July and August.

NEXT BRUNCH PLANNED for AUGUST 7th

High school graduates Donovan Reed, Alyza Steinhauer and Brody Stoneroad plus Brianna Custer (who received her Medical Degree from Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine) will be recognized on August 7th at the 10:00 am worship service. The Ladies Aid will present a gift to each and following the service, council members would like to host another brunch. Will you plan to come? Please let Pastor Brody know if so. Thanks! If not enough people commit, another date will be proposed.

We give thanks and feel blessed that you have chosen to worship with us today.

MORE INFORMATION

Please visit our website: halifaxmessiah.church for weekly updates and archived materials, bulletins with hymn lyrics, articles, descriptions of various programs and ministries, newsletters, recorded services, text versions of sermons, a monthly calendar, and a way to give online.

Our 10 AM (and joint services) are available every week as a live streamed event via Facebook and available later in the day on YouTube. Please let us know if you watch online, have any questions, or would like to meet with the pastor in person.

LET US PRAY

Prayer knits the waiting, expectant community together. It isn’t just for those being prayed for. It’s an act of faith where others are lifted up and entrusted to God.

New prayer requests:

Please fill out prayer request cards from now on and provide your name, the person for whom you are requesting prayer, their contact information and a few details.

Continuing to add names verbally will lead to persons being left off the prayer list. And without written notes, the pastor cannot remember/connect names with specific needs for prayer.

Filling out a card will allow the pastor to make contact, initiate pastoral care, and request permission to place a person’s name on the prayer list. Alternatively, you may email or text as long as you provide the same details. Following this plan will assure consistency, improve communication and help those for whom we pray. Please email concerns and/or requests including your name and theirs, contact information, and a few specifics to: elsiebbrody@gmail.com  Or text (443)-974-5558. Thank you.
