ENTRANCE HYMN  Holy, Holy, Holy     #165

1   Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

2   Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee,
casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,
which wert and art and evermore shalt be.

3   Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee,
though the eye made blind by sin thy glory may not see,
only thou art holy; there is none beside thee,
perfect in pow’r, in love and purity.

4   Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea.
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

PRAYER OF THE DAY

God of heaven and earth, before the foundation of the universe and the beginning of time you are the triune God: Author of creation, eternal Word of salvation, life-giving Spirit of wisdom. Guide us to all truth by your Spirit, that we may proclaim all that Christ has revealed and rejoice in the glory he shares with us. Glory and praise to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and forever.  Amen.

FIRST READING        PROVERBS 8:1-4, 22-31

Does not wisdom call, and does not understanding raise her voice? On the heights, beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand; beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries out: “To you, O people, I call, and my cry is to all that live. The Lord created me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of long ago. Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth. When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water. Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth— when he had not yet made earth and fields, or the world’s first bits of soil. When he established the heavens, I was there, when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, when he made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains of the deep, when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth, then I was beside him, like a master worker; and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always, rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the human race.”

PSALM 8

Lord our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!—

you whose glory is chanted above the heavens out of the mouths of infants and children; you have set up a fortress against your enemies, to silence the foe and avenger. Your glory is chanted above the heavens.

When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars you have set in their courses,

what are mere mortals that you should be mindful of them, human beings that you should care for them? Your glory is chanted above the heavens.

Yet you have made them little less than divine; with glory and honor you crown them.

You have made them rule over the works of your hands; you have put all things under their feet:

all flocks and cattle, even the wild beasts of the field,

the birds of the air, the fish of the sea, and whatever passes along the paths of the sea.

Lord our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Your glory is chanted above the heavens.

SECOND READING     ROMANS 5:1-5

Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Alleluia. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; God’s glory fills the whole earth. Alleluia. (Isa. 6:3)

GOSPEL     JOHN 16:12-15

[Jesus said,] “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason, I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”

SERMON followed by Meditation

HYMN of the DAY     Father Most Holy     #169

1   Father most holy, merciful, and tender;
Jesus, our Savior, with the Father reigning;
Spirit of comfort, advocate, defender,
light never waning.

2   Trinity blessed, unity unshaken;
goodness unbounded, very God of heaven,
light of the angels, joy of those forsaken,
hope of all living.

3   Maker of all things, all thy creatures praise thee;
all for thy worship were and are created;
now, as we also worship thee devoutly,
hear thou our voices.

4   Lord God Almighty, unto thee be glory,
one in three persons, over all exalted!
Glory we offer, praise thee and adore thee,
now and forever.

PRAYERS of INTERCESSION

United in Christ and guided by the Spirit, we pray to God for the church, creation, and all in need. A brief silence.

One God, giver of life, you established peace through your Son and gave your church hope of sharing in your glory. Enliven us by your Spirit to speak and act in love for the sake of the whole world. God of grace, hear our prayer.

Creator of all, you rejoice in creation and give humankind responsibility for the works of your hands. Instill in everyone your Spirit of care for the earth, especially in areas threatened by ecological devastation where plants cannot grow and living creatures suffer. God of grace, hear our prayer.

Loving Redeemer, you delight in the human race. Move the hearts of world leaders to seek wisdom, speak truth, and care for all endangered by poverty, prejudice, or violence. Unite and further the work of international collaboration and global peacemaking. God of grace, hear our prayer.

Abiding Comforter, you call out to all who live. Restore severed relationships and protect children who lack trustworthy caregivers. Grant hope to those who are experiencing fear, pain, or grief (especially those on our prayer list). God of grace, hear our prayer.

Holy Three, you are the model of community. Create and sustain ministries supportive of those who are isolated or lonely. Nurture and provide endurance for vital relationships and activities within our congregations. Move us forward, outward and beyond. God of grace, hear our prayer.

Holy God, we remember your saints for their strong faith and witness, even unto death. Console grieving families, communities, cities and countries suffering loss. God of grace, hear our prayer.

God of every time and place, in Jesus’ name, filled by and with your Holy Spirit, we entrust these spoken prayers, those in our hearts and in the hearts of others longing to be heard. Teach us not only to pray, but to act according to your will. Amen.

BLESSING

The God of peace, Father,  Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you, comfort you, and show you the path of life this day and always.

Amen.

CLOSING HYMN     Rise Up, O Saints of God!     #383

1   Rise up, O saints of God!
From vain ambitions turn;
Christ rose triumphant that your hearts
With nobler zeal might burn.

2   Speak out, O saints of God!
Despair engulfs earth’s frame;
As heirs of God’s baptismal grace,
His word of hope proclaim.

3   Rise up, O saints of God!
His kingdoms task embrace;
Redress sin’s cruel consequence;
Give justice larger place.

4   Give heed, O saints of God!
Creation cries in pain;
Stretch forth your hand of healing now,
With love the weak sustain.

5 Commit your hearts to seek
The paths which Christ has trod
And quickened by the Spirit’s power,
Rise up, O saints of God!

DISMISSAL

Go in peace. Love your neighbor.

Thanks be to God.

MESSIAH SUNDAY SCHOOL SCHEDULE

On the second and fourth Sundays of each month, adults and youth will gather for Sunday School starting at 9:00 AM. Children’s Sunday School  will be offered during the 10:00 AM worship service at Messiah. On the second and fourth Sundays of each month, right after the children’s sermon, potty trained children ages 2 up to 5th grade will be escorted from the sanctuary by their teacher.

MESSIAH WORSHIP SCHEDULE

Starting June 19, Messiah will have worship service on the third Sunday during the summer months outdoors in St Peter Pavilion. This will continue in the months of June, July and August.

RE-ENVISIONING VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL in 2023

On June 7th, a meeting of past VBS leaders, Pastor Brody, and other interested parties was held at Messiah Lutheran Church. Topics of discussion included merits of the church’s prior years of involvement in contributing to the growth and development of faith, general enrichment to member families and the community at-large.

Also noted were many changes in the surrounding culture since 2019 and realization that most families have already scheduled out the summer of 2022. Further conversation resulted in a decision to begin planning again next January, to brainstorm ideas and possibly partner with other recognizable faces/entities in the community.

The goal is to increase the number of children willing/able/wanting to participate in a summer program sponsored by the church. Those at the meeting hope others will come forward to offer ideas, input and support to help re-envision Vacation Bible School in the summer of 2023.

PROJECT SUNGLASSES

During the month of June, Messiah’s Health Ministry will place a container at Messiah at the side door entrance for donations of sunglasses to help Medical Missionary Mary Klaus.  Mary visits mainly third world countries.

According to Mary, sunglasses are a popular item among many recipients of her care.  She will distribute them to children and adults on her mission trips to various countries.   Any kind of sunglasses, new or used, plain or with logos or designs, adult or child, are appreciated.

Please contact Sandy Dreibelbis at 717-512-5012 with any questions.  Thank you for your generosity!

2022 SCHOOL KITS

The Upper Dauphin Conference Lutheran Youth Organization (LYO) will again gather items donated for school kits and assemble them on September 18thth at 3:00 pm at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Pavilion.  Those helping are asked to bring a bottle of water. These kits will be distributed by Lutheran World Relief to needy children around the world.

Each of the congregations of our conference has been asked to contribute items to make this project possible. Our two churches have been asked to provide 700 notebooks (70-sheet, wide- or college-ruled, approximately 8 x 10½”; no loose-leaf paper, please).

Please consider donating notebooks for this project. Donation boxes will be located at each church in July.

Thank you for your kindness!

COMMUNITY GARDEN HELP

Messiah’s community garden could use your help throughout the summer. If you are not familiar with the Messiah’s community garden, it is located on the rental property next to the church, with the wooden picket fence. The garden has provided vegetables to local food banks since 2015. If you have garden tools and gloves, please feel free to bring them along.

Keep in mind that the garden is a great place to honor social distancing, while serving your community. If you would like to be a regular or occasional “garden helper” please contact Beth Hogan at 717-896-2269. Thank you.

GROCERY GIFT CARDS

If you shop at Giant Foods and/or Weis Markets and would like to help Messiah at no cost to yourself, please consider purchasing grocery gift cards through the church. For every $100 of gift cards purchased, you receive $100 in groceries and Messiah receives $5. If you’re interested, please contact Dianna Reed at 717-692-5317.
