PRELUDE

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS     Page 56

ENTRANCE HYMN     O Zion, Haste     #397

1   O Zion, haste, your mission high fulfilling,
to tell to all the world that God is light;
that he who made all nations is not willing
one soul should perish, lost in shades of night.

 Refrain
Publish glad tidings, tidings of peace,
tidings of Jesus, redemption, and release.

2   Publish to ev’ry people, tongue, and nation
that God, in whom they live and move, is love;
tell how he stooped to save his lost creation
and died on earth that we might live above.
Refrain

3   Give of your own to bear the message glorious,
give of your wealth to speed them on their way,
pour out your soul for them in prayer victorious,
and haste the coming of the glorious day.
Refrain

4   He comes again! O Zion, ere you meet him,
make known to ev’ry heart his saving grace;
let none whom he has ransomed fail to greet him,
through your neglect, unfit to see his face.
Refrain

PRAYER OF THE DAY

God of heaven and earth, before the foundation of the universe and the beginning of time you are the triune God: Author of creation, eternal Word of salvation, life-giving Spirit of wisdom. Guide us to all truth by your Spirit, that we may proclaim all that Christ has revealed and rejoice in the glory he shares with us. Glory and praise to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and forever.  Amen.

FIRST READING     ISAIAH 65:1-9

I was ready to be sought out by those who did not ask, to be found by those who did not seek me. I said, “Here I am, here I am,” to a nation that did not call on my name. I held out my hands all day long to a rebellious people, who walk in a way that is not good, following their own devices; a people who provoke me to my face continually, sacrificing in gardens and offering incense on bricks; who sit inside tombs, and spend the night in secret places; who eat swine’s flesh, with broth of abominable things in their vessels; who say, “Keep to yourself, do not come near me, for I am too holy for you.” These are a smoke in my nostrils, a fire that burns all day long. See, it is written before me: I will not keep silent, but I will repay; I will indeed repay into their laps their iniquities and their ancestors’ iniquities together, says the Lord; because they offered incense on the mountains and reviled me on the hills, I will measure into their lap’s full payment for their actions. Thus, says the Lord: As the wine is found in the cluster, and they say, “Do not destroy it, for there is a blessing in it,” so I will do for my servants’ sake, and not destroy them all. I will bring forth descendants from Jacob, and from Judah inheritors of my mountains; my chosen shall inherit it, and my servants shall settle there.

PSALM 22:19-28

But you, O Lord, be not far away; O my help, hasten to my aid.

Deliver me from the sword, my life from the power of the dog.

Save me from the lion’s mouth! From the horns of wild bulls, you have rescued me.

I will declare your name to my people; in the midst of the assembly I will praise you.

You who fear the Lord, give praise! All you of Jacob’s line, give glory. Stand in awe of the Lord, all you offspring of Israel.

For the Lord does not despise nor abhor the poor in their poverty; neither is the Lord’s face hidden from them; but when they cry out, the Lord hears them.

From you comes my praise in the great assembly; I will perform my vows in the sight of those who fear the Lord.

The poor shall eat and be satisfied, Let those who seek the Lord give praise! May your hearts live forever! In the midst of the assembly I will praise you.

All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord; all the families of nations shall bow before God.

For dominion belongs to the Lord who rules over the nations. In the midst of the assembly I will praise you.

SECOND READING     GALATIANS 3:23-29

Now before faith came, we were imprisoned and guarded under the law until faith would be revealed. Therefore, the law was our disciplinarian until Christ came, so that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer subject to a disciplinarian, for in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to the promise.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Alleluia. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; God’s glory fills the whole earth. Alleluia (Isaiah  6:3).

GOSPEL     LUKE 8:26-39

Then [Jesus and his disciples] arrived at the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. As he stepped out on land, a man of the city who had demons met him. For a long time, he had worn no clothes, and he did not live in a house but in the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he fell down before him and shouted at the top of his voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me”—for Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many times it had seized him; he was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the wilds.) Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” He said, “Legion”; for many demons had entered him. They begged him not to order them to go back into the abyss. Now there on the hillside a large herd of swine was feeding; and the demons begged Jesus to let them enter these. So, he gave them permission. Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. When the swineherds saw what had happened, they ran off and told it in the city and in the country. Then people came out to see what had happened, and when they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. Those who had seen it told them how the one who had been possessed by demons had been healed. Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them; for they were seized with great fear. So, he got into the boat and returned. The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but Jesus sent him away, saying, “Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.” So, he went away, proclaiming throughout the city how much Jesus had done for him.

SERMON followed by Meditation

HYMN of the DAY     Holy God, We Praise Your Name     #535

1   Holy God, we praise your name;
Lord of all, we bow before you.
All on earth your scepter claim,
all in heav’n above adore you.
Infinite your vast domain,
everlasting is your reign.

2   Hark! The glad celestial hymn
angel choirs above are raising;
cherubim and seraphim,
in unceasing chorus praising,
fill the heav’ns with sweet accord:
“Holy, holy, holy Lord!”

3   Lo, the apostolic train
join your sacred name to hallow;
prophets swell the glad refrain,
and the white-robed martyrs follow;
and from morn to set of sun
through the church the song goes on.

4   Holy Father, holy Son,
Holy Spirit, three we name you,
though in essence only one;
undivided God we claim you
and, adoring, bend the knee
while we own the mystery.

PROFESSION of FAITH/NICENE CREED     Page 64

PRAYERS of INTERCESSION

United in Christ and guided by the Spirit, we pray for the church, creation, and all in need. A brief silence.

Holy God, you hear the cries of those who seek wholeness. Equip your church with outstretched hands, help us deliver relief and offer sanctuary through you. God of grace, hear our prayer.

You hear the cries of the earth. Restore places where land, air, and waterways have been harmed. Guide us to develop and implement sources of energy and food production that do not destroy the earth. God of grace, hear our prayer.

You hear the cries of those who are marginalized and cast out. Bring true freedom and human flourishing to all your beloved children. God of grace, hear our prayer.

You hear the cries of those who suffer. Come to the aid of all who are homeless, naked, hungry, and sick (especially those on our prayer list). Bring understanding, compassion and peace to those experiencing mental distress or illness. May everyone clearly recognize the needs of the injured and hurting. God of grace, hear our prayer.

You hear the cries of those who celebrate and those who grieve this Father’s Day. Nurture mutual love and tender care in all relationships. Comfort those for whom this day brings sadness or longing. God of grace, hear our prayer.

We give thanks for the faithful departed whose lives proclaimed you. At the last, unite us so we may share the joy of making our home in you. God of grace, hear our prayer.

God of every time and place, in Jesus’ name and filled with your Holy Spirit, we entrust these spoken prayers and those in our hearts to your holy keeping. Amen.

CLOSING HYMN   I, the Lord of Sea and Sky     #752 (WOV)

1   “I, the Lord of sea and sky,
I have heard my people cry.
All who dwell in dark and sin
my hand will save.
I, who made the stars of night,
I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear my light to them?
Whom shall I send?”

Refrain

Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go, Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.

2   “I, the Lord of snow and rain,
I have borne my people’s pain.
I have wept for love of them.
They turn away.
I will break their hearts of stone,
give them hearts for love alone.
I will speak my word to them.
Whom shall I send?” Refrain

3   “I, the Lord of wind and flame,
I will tend the poor and lame.
I will set a feast for them.
My hand will save.
Finest bread I will provide
till their hearts be satisfied.
I will give my life to them.
Whom shall I send?” Refrain

DISMISSAL

Go in peace. Love your neighbor.

Thanks be to God.

MESSIAH SUNDAY SCHOOL SCHEDULE

On the second and fourth Sundays of each month, adults and youth will gather for Sunday School starting at 9:00 AM. Children’s Sunday School will be offered during the 10:00 AM worship service at Messiah. Right after the children’s sermon, toilet-trained children ages 2 up to 5th grade will be escorted from the sanctuary by their teacher(s).

MESSIAH WORSHIP SCHEDULE

Starting June 19, Messiah will have worship service on the third Sunday during the summer months outdoors in St. Peter Pavilion. This will continue in the months of June, July, and August.

NEXT BRUNCH PLANNED for AUGUST 7th

High school graduates Donovan Reed, Alyza Steinhauer and Brody Stoneroad, as well as Brianna Custer (who received her Medical Degree from Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine) will be recognized on August 7th at the 10:00 AM worship service. The Ladies Aid will present a gift to each and following the service, council members would like to host another brunch. Will you plan to come? Please let Pastor Brody know if so. Thanks! If not enough people commit, another date will be proposed.

RE-ENVISIONING VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL in 2023

On June 7th, a meeting of past VBS leaders, Pastor Brody, and other interested parties was held at Messiah Lutheran Church. Topics of discussion included merits of the church’s prior years of involvement in contributing to the growth and development of faith, general enrichment to member families and the community at-large.

Also noted were many changes in the surrounding culture since 2019 and realization that most families have already scheduled out the summer of 2022. Further conversation resulted in a decision to begin planning again next January, to brainstorm ideas and possibly partner with other recognizable faces/entities in the community.

The goal is to increase the number of children willing/able/wanting to participate in a summer program sponsored by the church. Those at the meeting hope others will come forward to offer ideas, input and support to help re-envision Vacation Bible School in the summer of 2023.

PROJECT SUNGLASSES

During the month of June, Messiah’s Health Ministry will place a container at Messiah at the side door entrance for donations of sunglasses to help Medical Missionary Mary Klaus.  Mary visits mainly third world countries.

According to Mary, sunglasses are a popular item among many recipients of her care.  She will distribute them to children and adults on her mission trips to various countries.   Any kind of sunglasses, new or used, plain or with logos or designs, adult or child, are appreciated.

Please contact Sandy Dreibelbis at 717-512-5012 with any questions.  Thank you for your generosity!

2022 SCHOOL KITS

The Upper Dauphin Conference Lutheran Youth Organization (LYO) will again gather items donated for school kits and assemble them on September 18thth at 3:00 pm at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Pavilion.  Those helping are asked to bring a bottle of water. These kits will be distributed by Lutheran World Relief to needy children around the world.

Each of the congregations of our conference has been asked to contribute items to make this project possible. Our two churches have been asked to provide 700 notebooks (70-sheet, wide- or college-ruled, approximately 8 x 10½, but no loose-leaf paper, please).

Please consider donating notebooks for this project. Donation boxes will be located at each church in July.

Thank you for your kindness!

COMMUNITY GARDEN HELP

Messiah’s community garden could use your help throughout the summer. If you are not familiar with the Messiah’s community garden, it is located on the rental property next to the church, with the wooden picket fence. The garden has provided vegetables to local food banks since 2015. If you have garden tools and gloves, please feel free to bring them along.

Keep in mind that the garden is a great place to honor social distancing, while serving your community. If you would like to be a regular or occasional “garden helper” please contact Beth Hogan at 717-896-2269. Thank you.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS FOR JUNE

19 – 2nd  Sunday of Pentecost

Father’s Day

26 – 3rd Sunday of Pentecost

LET US PRAY

Prayer knits the waiting, expectant community together. It isn’t just for those being prayed for. It’s an act of faith where others are lifted up and entrusted to God.

NEW PRAYER REQUESTS

Please fill out prayer request cards from now on and provide your name, the person for whom you are requesting prayer, their contact information and a few details.

Continuing to add names verbally will lead to persons being left off the prayer list. And without written notes, the pastor cannot remember/connect names with specific needs for prayer.

Filling out a card will allow the pastor to make contact, initiate pastoral care, and request permission to place a person’s name on the prayer list. Alternatively, you may email or text as long as you provide the same details. Following this plan will assure consistency, improve communication and help those for whom we pray. Please email concerns and/or requests including your name and theirs, contact information, and a few specifics to: elsiebbrody@gmail.com  Or text (443)-974-5558. Thank you.
