GREETING AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

PRELUDE

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS     Page 56

ENTRANCE HYMN     You Servants of God     #252

1   You servants of God, your master proclaim,
and publish abroad his wonderful name;
the name, all-victorious, of Jesus extol;
his kingdom is glorious and rules over all!

2   Our God rules on high, almighty to save;
and still he is nigh, his presence we have.
The great congregation his triumph shall sing,
ascribing salvation to Jesus, our king!

3   Salvation to God who sits on the throne!
Let all cry aloud and honor the Son.
The praises of Jesus the angels proclaim,
fall down on their faces, and worship the Lamb.

4   Then let us adore and give him his right,
all glory and pow’r and wisdom and might,
all honor and blessing, with angels above,
and thanks never ceasing, and infinite love!

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Sovereign God, ruler of all hearts, you call us to obey you, and you favor us with true freedom. Keep us faithful to the ways of your Son, that, leaving behind all that hinders us, we may steadfastly follow your paths, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

FIRST READING     1 KINGS 19:15-16, 19-21

Then the Lord said to [Elijah,] “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus; when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael as king over Aram. Also you shall anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel; and you shall anoint Elisha son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah as prophet in your place. So he set out from there, and found Elisha son of Shaphat, who was plowing. There were twelve yoke of oxen ahead of him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah passed by him and threw his mantle over him. He left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, “Let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.” Then Elijah said to him, “Go back again; for what have I done to you?” He returned from following him, took the yoke of oxen, and slaughtered them; using the equipment from the oxen, he boiled their flesh, and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out and followed Elijah, and became his servant.

PSALM 16

Protect me, O God, for I take refuge in you; I have said to the Lord, “You are my Lord, my good above all other.”

All my delight is in the godly that are in the land, upon those who are noble among the people.

But those who run after other gods shall have their troubles multiplied.

I will not pour out drink offerings to such gods, never take their names upon my lips. I have set the Lord always before me.

Lord, you are my portion and my cup; it is you who uphold my lot.

My boundaries enclose a pleasant land; indeed, I have a rich inheritance.

I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel; my heart teaches me night after night.

I have set the Lord always before me; because God is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. I have set the Lord always before me.

My heart, therefore, is glad, and my spirit rejoices; my body also shall rest in hope.

For you will not abandon me to the grave, nor let your holy one see the pit.

You will show me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy, and in your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

I have set the Lord always before me.

SECOND READING     GALATIANS 5:1, 13-25

For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” If, however, you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another. Live by the Spirit, I say, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. For what the flesh desires is opposed to the Spirit, and what the Spirit desires is opposed to the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not subject to the law. Now the works of the flesh are obvious: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these. I am warning you, as I warned you before: those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION     Isaiah 6:3

Alleluia. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; God’s glory fills the whole earth. Alleluia.

GOSPEL           LUKE  9:51-62

When the days drew near for [Jesus] to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. And he sent messengers ahead of him. On their way they entered a village of the Samaritans to make ready for him; but they did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. When his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” But he turned and rebuked them. Then they went on to another village. As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” But Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” Another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” Jesus said to him, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

SERMON followed by Meditation

HYMN of the DAY      Jesus Calls Us; O’er the Tumult     #494

1   Jesus calls us; o’er the tumult
of our life’s wild, restless sea,
day by day his clear voice sounding,
saying, “Christian, follow me.”

2   As of old St. Andrew heard it
by the Galilean lake,
turned from home and toil and kindred,
leaving all for his dear sake.

3   Jesus calls us from the worship
of the vain world’s golden store,
from each idol that would keep us,
saying, “Christian, love me more.”

4   In our joys and in our sorrows,
days of toil and hours of ease,
still he calls, in cares and pleasures,
“Christian, love me more than these.”

5   Jesus calls us! In your mercy,
Savior, make us hear your call,
give our hearts to your obedience,
serve and love you best of all.

PROFESSION of FAITH/APOSTLE’S CREED     Page 65

PRAYERS of INTERCESSION

United in Christ and guided by the Spirit, we pray for the church, the creation, and all in need. A brief silence.

God of faithfulness, set our gaze firmly on you. Direct your church toward love so it will succeed in its purpose on earth, be sustained and experience the freedom that comes with giving. God of grace, hear our prayer.

God of gentleness, strengthen the earth’s ability to heal. Where there are dangerous storms, bring calm. Where there are destructive fires, bring rain. Protect homes, habitats, lives and livelihoods threatened by climate disasters. God of grace, hear our prayer.

God of peace, may your Spirit discomfort all who govern whenever they place self-promotion over the good of citizens. Let them feel the weight of the mantle placed on their shoulders, understand their responsibility and focus on their calling. Protect all who struggle due to conflict or abuse of power. God of grace, hear our prayer.

God of kindness, reveal your healing presence to all who are sick or dying (especially those on our prayer list). Uphold those who grieve. Protect those who don’t have what they need. Connect, encourage and inspire them to new opportunities. God of grace, hear our prayer.

God of love, spring the traps of addiction, depression, and anger before they capture more victims. Help programs, institutions, and systems work together as  companions toward health and wholeness. Give the poor hope so they can realize the fullness of joy in your presence. God of grace, hear our prayer.

God of joy, we give thanks for all who have died and now celebrate the inheritance of life in you. Keep their examples of faithfulness always before us, that we trust your promises in life and in death. God of grace, hear our prayer.

God of every time and place, in Jesus’ name and filled with your Holy Spirit, we entrust these spoken prayers and those in our hearts into your holy keeping. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER     Page 76

BLESSING

The God of peace, Father,  Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you, comfort you, and show you the path of life this day and always.

Amen.

CLOSING HYMN     Now Thank We All Our God     #534

1   Now thank we all our God with hearts and hands and voices,
who wondrous things has done, in whom his world rejoices;
who, from our mothers’ arms, has blest us on our way
with countless gifts of love, and still is ours today.

2   Oh, may this bounteous God through all our life be near us,
with ever joyful hearts
and blessed peace to cheer us,
and keep us in his grace,
and guide us when perplexed,
and free us from all harm
in this world and the next.

3   All praise and thanks to God the Father now be given,
the Son, and him who reigns
with them in highest heaven,
the one eternal God,
whom earth and heav’n adore;
for thus it was, is now,
and shall be evermore.

DISMISSAL

Go in peace. Love your neighbor.

Thanks be to God.

Altar flowers at St Peter have been presented by Ross and Nicole Miller in memory of Lauren Spence

Altar flowers at Messiah have been presented by Beth and Drew Hogan to the glory of God.

PROJECT SUNGLASSES

During the month of June, Messiah’s Health Ministry will place a container at Messiah at the side door entrance for donations of sunglasses to help Medical Missionary Mary Klaus.  Mary visits mainly third world countries.

According to Mary, sunglasses are a popular item among many recipients of her care.  She will distribute them to children and adults on her mission trips to various countries.   Any kind of sunglasses, new or used, plain or with logos or designs, adult or child, are appreciated.

Please contact Sandy Dreibelbis at 717-512-5012 with any questions.  Thank you for your generosity!

PERSONAL CARE KITS

When natural disasters strike or war drives families from their homes, as we see over and over in the news, our hearts ache with compassion.  But what can we do?

Making Lutheran World Relief (LWR) kits is a simple, tangible way to offer comfort to those suffering and express love to our neighbors in need.

Messiah ladies are again collecting personal care kits to be shipped to and distributed by Lutheran World Relief.   These kits provide the basic needs for personal hygiene.

Each kit includes the following items:

  • One light weight bath-size towel (52X27”), dark colors are recommended
  • 2 bars of bath-size soap (4-5oz each)
  • 1 adult toothbrush in the original packaging, or sealed in a business envelope—no plastic wrap
  • 1 study comb
  • 1 metal nail clipper

Please consider purchasing the needed items for one or more kits.  There are baskets at the front of the church for each item—no need to remove tags or wrappings. Please have your kit items to the church by September 18th.  We will be assembling the kits September 25th during the adult Sunday School hour. Thank you for participating in this LWR ministry!

2022 SCHOOL KITS

The Upper Dauphin Conference Lutheran Youth Organization (LYO) will again gather items donated for school kits and assemble them on September 18thth at 3:00 pm at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Pavilion.  Those helping are asked to bring a bottle of water. These kits will be distributed by Lutheran World Relief to needy children around the world.

Each of the congregations of our conference has been asked to contribute items to make this project possible. Our two churches have been asked to provide 700 notebooks (70-sheet, wide- or college-ruled, approximately 8 x 10½”; no loose-leaf paper, please).

Please consider donating notebooks for this project. Donation boxes will be located at each church in July.

Thank you for your kindness!

MESSIAH SUNDAY SCHOOL SCHEDULE

On the second and fourth Sundays of each month, adults and youth will gather for Sunday School starting at 9:00 AM. Children’s Sunday School  will be offered during the 10am worship service at Messiah. On the second and fourth Sundays of each month, right after the children’s sermon, toilet trained children ages 2 up to 5th grade will be escorted from the sanctuary by their teacher.

MESSIAH WORSHIP SCHEDULE

Starting June 19, Messiah will have worship service on the third Sunday during the summer months outdoors in St Peter Pavilion. This will continue in the months of June, July and August.

NEXT BRUNCH PLANNED for AUGUST 7th

High school graduates Donovan Reed, Alyza Steinhauer and Brody Stoneroad plus Brianna Custer (who received her Medical Degree from Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine) will be recognized on August 7th at the 10:00 am worship service. The Ladies Aid will present a gift to each and following the service, council members would like to host another brunch. Will you plan to come? Please let Pastor Brody know if so. Thanks! If not enough people commit, another date will be proposed.

COMMUNITY GARDEN HELP

Messiah’s community garden could use your help throughout the summer. If you are not familiar with the Messiah’s community garden, it is located on the rental property next to the church, with the wooden picket fence. The garden has provided vegetables to local food banks since 2015. If you have garden tools and gloves, please feel free to bring them along.

Keep in mind that the garden is a great place to honor social distancing, while serving your community. If you would like to be a regular or occasional “garden helper” please contact Beth Hogan at 717-896-2269. Thank you.

WEIS GROCERY GIFT CARDS

If you shop at Weis Markets and would like to help Messiah at no cost to yourself, please consider purchasing grocery gift cards through the church.  For every $100 of gift cards purchased, you will receive $100 of groceries and Messiah will receive $5.  If you are interested, please contact Dianna Reed at 717-692-5317. Messiah is no longer participating in the Giant Gift Card Program.

Please visit our website: halifaxmessiah.church for weekly updates and archived materials, bulletins with hymn lyrics, articles, descriptions of various programs and ministries, newsletters, recorded services, text versions of sermons, a monthly calendar, and way to give online.

Our 10am (and joint services) are available every week as a live streamed event via Facebook and available later in the day on YouTube. Please let us know if you watch online, have any questions, or would like to meet with the pastor in person.

We give thanks and feel blessed that you have chosen to worship with us today.

LET US PRAY

Prayer knits the waiting, expectant community together. It isn’t just for those being prayed for. It’s an act of faith where others are lifted up and entrusted to God.

New prayer requests

Please fill out prayer request cards from now on and provide your name, the person for whom you are requesting prayer, their contact information and a few details.

Continuing to add names verbally will lead to persons being left off the prayer list. And without written notes, the pastor cannot remember/connect names with specific needs for prayer.

Filling out a card will allow the pastor to make contact, initiate pastoral care, and request permission to place a person’s name on the prayer list. Alternatively, you may email or text as long as you provide the same details. Following this plan will assure consistency, improve communication and help those for whom we pray. Please email concerns and/or requests including your name and theirs, contact information, and a few specifics to: elsiebbrody@gmail.com  Or text (443)-974-5558. Thank you.
