Sixth Sunday of Easter

ANNOUNCEMENTS

PRELUDE

CONFESSION and FORGIVENESS     Page 56

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Most merciful God,

We confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

O God, you have prepared for those who love you joys beyond understanding. Pour into our hearts such love for you that, loving you above all things, we may obtain your promises, which exceed all we can desire; through Jesus Christ, your Son and our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

FIRST READING     ACTS 10:44-48

While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said, “Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days.

PSALM     98

🎶Sing a new song to the Lord, who has done | marvelous things, whose right hand and holy arm have | won the victory.

🎶O Lord, you have made | known your victory, you have revealed your righteousness in the sight | of the nations.

🎶You remember your steadfast love and faithfulness to the | house of Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the victory | of our God.

🎶Shout with joy to the Lord, | all you lands; lift up your voice, re- | joice, and sing.

🎶Sing to the Lord | with the harp, with the harp and the | voice of song.

🎶With trumpets and the sound | of the horn shout with joy before the | king, the Lord.

🎶Let the sea roar, and | all that fills it, the world and those who | dwell therein.

🎶Let the rivers | clap their hands, and let the hills ring out with joy before the Lord, who comes to | judge the earth.

🎶The LORD will judge the | world with righteousness and the peoples with equity.

SECOND READING     1 JOHN 5:1-6

Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION     Page 62

🎶Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia. Alleluia.

The Holy Gospel according to Saint John, the 15th chapter.

🎶Glory to you, O Lord.

GOSPEL    JOHN 15:9-17

[Jesus said:] “As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s command-ments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

🎶Praise to you, O Christ.

HYMN of the DAY

O Love That Will Not Let Me Go     #324

PROFESSION of FAITH     Nicene Creed     Page 64

We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the virgin Mary and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered, died, and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYERS of INTERCESSION

Rejoicing that Jesus is risen and love has triumphed over fear, we pray for the church, the world, and all those in need of good news. A brief silence.

Your Holy Spirit falls upon all who hear the word. Fill your church with the Spirit’s gifts, including the gift of understanding to better strengthen partnerships between Protestant denominations and other faiths. God of grace, hear our prayer.

You speak and the face of the earth is renewed. Revive your creation, that habitats and every kind of living thing might flourish. Protect endangered species and help us to care for all your creatures. God of grace, hear our prayer.

Your world is divided and the nations rage. Grant wisdom and vision to world leaders so that justice and goodness prevail over other interests. Strengthen international efforts aimed toward compassion and peace. God of grace, hear our prayer.

Your children are in need. Comfort all those who suffer, especially those on our prayer list and any afflicted by anxiety, depression, or mental illness. Help us to be conduits of your love in our care for one another.  God of grace, hear our prayer.

Your work is done on earth by human hands. May the ministries of this congregation embody your love for families, small communities and the entire world. Inspire and lead us to serve and worship you in acts of voluntary generosity. God of grace, hear our prayer.

Every saint finds blessing and rest in you, Lord. With thankful hearts we remember those who came and went before us. At the last, we anticipate complete restoration and joyful reunion with each other and you. God of grace, hear our prayer.

As one God, the Trinity is equal in glory, coeternal in majesty, uncreated and infinite. Into your care, almighty Father, Son and Holy Spirit we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your divine mercy, your holy capability and pure unending love. Amen.

EXCHANGE of PEACE

OFFERING

OFFERTORY     Page 66

🎶Let the vineyards be fruitful, Lord and fill to the brim our cup of blessing. Gather a harvest of the seeds that were sown, that we may be fed with the bread of life. Gather the hopes and the dreams of all; unite them with the prayer we offer now. Grace our table with your presence, and give us a foretaste of the feast to come.

PRAYER

Blessed are you, O Lord our God, maker of all things. Through your goodness you have blessed us with these gifts. With them we offer ourselves to your service and dedicate our lives to the care and redemption of all that you have made, for the sake of him who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
