All Saints’ Day

ANNOUNCEMENTS

PRELUDE

BRIEF ORDER OF CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Most merciful God, we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his Son to die for us and, for his sake, forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

ENTRANCE HYMN

For All Your Saints, O Lord     #176

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Almighty God, you have knit your people together in one communion in the mystical body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Grant us grace to follow your blessed saints in lives of faith and commitment, and to know the inexpressible joys you have prepared for those who love you, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

FIRST READING  Revelation 7:9-17

After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne and to the Lamb!” And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, singing, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”  Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?” I said to him, “Sir, you are the one who knows.” Then he said to me, “These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For this reason they are before the throne of God and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat, for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

PSALM 34:1-10, 22

I will bless the Lord at all times; the praise of God shall ever be in my mouth.

I will glory in the Lord; let the lowly hear and rejoice.

Proclaim with me the greatness of the Lord; let us exalt God’s name together.

I sought the Lord, who answered me and delivered me from all my terrors.

Look upon the Lord and be radiant, and let not your faces be ashamed.

I called in my affliction, and the Lord heard me and saved me from all my troubles.

The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear the Lord and delivers them.

Taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are they who take refuge in God!

Fear the Lord, you saints of the Lord, for those who fear the Lord lack nothing.

The lions are in want and suffer hunger, but those who seek the Lord lack nothing that is good.

O Lord, you redeem the life of your servants, and those who put their trust in you will not be punished.

SECOND READING  1 John 3:1-3

See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God, and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.  Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

🎶Alleluia, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia. Alleluia.

The Holy Gospel according to Saint Matthew, the 5th chapter.

🎶Glory to you, O Lord.

GOSPEL  Matthew 5:1-12

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. And he began to speak and taught them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.  “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. “Blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.  Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

🎶Glory to you, O Christ.

HYMN OF THE DAY

Shall We Gather at the River     #690

PROFESSION OF FAITH     Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYERS of INTERCESSION

Among a great cloud of witnesses, we offer prayers for the church, the world, and creation. A brief silence.

Holy Spirit, fill your church with mercy and humility. Breathe life into houses of worship; fill homes with prayer. Inspire and renew faith everywhere. God of all saints, hear our prayer.

Creator of all, revitalize that which suffers. Protect air, soil and water. Inspire humans toward ways of living in harmony and joy with nature. God of all saints, hear our prayer.

Righteous God, inspire every nation to act toward justice and peace. Raise up leaders who listen to the needs of citizens and neighbors. Safeguard the process of elections with integrity. God of all saints, hear our prayer.

Compassionate One, bring comfort and care to all those in need, especially mourners. Sustain any who are weary, experience loneliness, or struggle with chronic illness (especially those on our prayer list). God of all saints, hear our prayer.

Merciful Savior, support vulnerable populations, especially those who are homebound or constantly deal with lack and instability. Bless everyone in helping professions or roles. God of all saints, hear our prayer.

Heavenly Father, with grateful hearts we remember all the saints who died this past year. Resting from their labors, we trust that you met them with open arms. (Names are read and the bell tolls for each). Fill us with joyful anticipation until you gather us by your side. God of all saints, hear our prayer.

God of all saints, full of steadfast love and tender mercies, ever faithful, committed to the world’s redemption, and the vision of sharing life together forever, we entrust our prayers to you in the name of Jesus, your beloved Son. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
