GREETING AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

PRELUDE

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS     Page 56

ENTRANCE HYMN     I Was There to Hear Your Bourning Cry     WOV#770

1   I was there to hear your borning cry,
I’ll be there when you are old.
I rejoiced the day you were baptized
to see your life unfold.
I was there when you were but a child,
with a faith to suit you well;
in a blaze of light you wandered off
to find where demons dwell.

2   When you heard the wonder of the Word
I was there to cheer you on;
you were raised to praise the living Lord,
to whom you now belong.
If you find someone to share your time
and you join your hearts as one,
I’ll be there to make your verses rhyme
from dusk till rising sun.

3   In the middle ages of your life,
not too old, no longer young,
I’ll be there to guide you through the night,
complete what I’ve begun.
When the evening gently closes in
and you shut your weary eyes,
I’ll be there as I have always been,
with just one more surprise.

4   I was there to hear your bourning cry,
I’ll be there when you are old.
I rejoiced the day you were baptized
to see your life unfold.

RITE OF BAPTISM

In Holy Baptism our gracious heavenly Father liberates us from sin and death by joining us to the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Once born children of a fallen humanity; in the waters of Baptism we are reborn children of God who inherit eternal life. By water and the Holy Spirit we are made members of the Church, the body of Christ. As we live with him and among his people, we grow in faith, love, and obedience to God’s will.

Who presents Colson to receive the Sacrament of Holy Baptism?

Parents/sponsors present the candidate and respond: We do.

In Christian love you present your child for Holy Baptism. You should, therefore, faithfully bring him to services in God’s house; teach him the Lord’s Prayer, Creed, and Ten Commandments. As he grows, you should place the Holy Scriptures in his hands and provide instruction for him in the Christian faith, so that, living in the covenant of his Baptism and in communion with the Church, he may lead a godly life all his days. Do you promise to fulfill these obligations?

Parents/sponsors present the candidate and respond: We do.

Thanksgiving

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Holy God, mighty Lord, gracious Father: We give you thanks, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and you created heaven and earth. By the gift of water you nourish and sustain all living things. By flood waters you condemned the wicked, but saved those you chose, who believed in you, Noah and his family. You led Israel by a pillar of cloud and fire through the sea, out of slavery into freedom of the promised land. In waters of the Jordan your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Spirit. By his death and resurrection your beloved Son set us free from bondage to sin and death, and opened the way to joy and freedom of everlasting life. He made water a sign of the kingdom, of cleansing and rebirth. In obedience to his command, we make disciples, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Pour out your Holy Spirit, so that the one here baptized may be given new life. Wash away the sin of he who is cleansed by this water. Bring him forth as an inheritor of your glorious kingdom. To you be praise, honor and worship through your Son, Jesus Christ, in unity with the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

Profession of Faith

I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the church, the faith in which we baptize.

Do you renounce all the forces of evil, the devil, and all his empty promises?

I do.

Do you believe in God the Father?

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and buried. He descended to the land of the dead and on the third day, he rose. Ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father. From there he will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen

Baptism

I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Anointing

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we give you thanks for freeing your sons and daughters from the power of sin and for raising them up to new life through this holy sacrament. Pour your Holy Spirit upon this child: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence. Amen.

Child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever.

Parents respond: Amen.

Council President: Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

Pastor: Let us pray. O God, giver of all life, look with kindness upon the father and mother of this child, his sponsors, and relatives. Let this family ever rejoice in the gifts you have given them. Make them teachers and examples of righteousness. Strengthen them in their own Baptisms so they may eternally share salvation with those they love, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Welcome

Through Baptism God has made our new brother a member of the priesthood we all share in Christ Jesus. May we proclaim the praise of God, bear God’s creative redeeming Word, and offer God’s life-giving powerful love to all the world. We welcome you into the Lord’s family. We receive you as a fellow member of the body of Christ, a child of the same heavenly Father, and a worker with us in the kingdom of God.

PEACE

The peace of the Lord be with you always.

And also with you.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Almighty God, you have knit your people together in one communion in the mystical body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Grant us grace to follow your blessed saints in lives of faith and commitment, and to know the inexpressible joys you have prepared for those who love you, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

FIRST READING     DANIEL 7:1-3, 15-18

In the first year of King Belshazzar of Babylon, Daniel had a dream and visions of his head as he lay in bed. Then he wrote down the dream: I, Daniel, saw in my vision by night the four winds of heaven stirring up the great sea, and four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another. As for me, Daniel, my spirit was troubled within me, and the visions of my head terrified me. I approached one of the attendants to ask him the truth concerning all this. So he said that he would disclose to me the interpretation of the matter: “As for these four great beasts, four kings shall arise out of the earth. But the holy ones of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever—forever and ever.”

PSALM     149

Hallelujah! Sing to the Lord a new song, God’s praise in the assembly of the faithful.

Let Israel rejoice in their maker; let the children of Zion be joyful in their ruler.

Let them praise their maker’s name with dancing; let them sing praise with tambourine and harp.

For the Lord takes pleasure in the people and adorns the poor with victory. Sing the Lord’s praise in the assembly of the faithful.

Let the faithful rejoice in triumph; let them sing for joy on their beds.

Let the praises of God be in their throat and a two-edged sword in their hand,

to wreak vengeance on the nations and punishment on the peoples,

to bind their kings in chains and their nobles with links of iron,

to inflict on them the judgment decreed; this is glory for all God’s faithful ones. Hallelujah!

Sing the Lord’s praise in the assembly of the faithful.

SECOND READING     EPHESIANS 1:11-23

In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory. I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION     Page 62

GOSPEL     LUKE 6:20-31

Then [Jesus] looked up at his disciples and said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. “Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. “Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. “Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. “But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. “Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. “Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. “Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets. “But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. Do to others as you would have them do to you.”

SERMON

HYMN OF THE DAY     For All the Saints     #174

1 For all the saints who from their labors rest,
all who by faith before the world confessed,
your name, O Jesus, be forever blest.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

2 You were their rock, their fortress, and their might;
you, Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight;
you, in the darkness drear, their one true light.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

3 Oh, may your soldiers, faithful, true, and bold,
fight as the saints who nobly fought of old
and win with them the victor’s crown of gold.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

United with your saints across time and place, we pray for the entire world, all created beings and the realms they inhabit.

Holy One, your church rests on the faithful who came before us, those baptized in the faith and other recipients of grace. Give all of your children the will to carry the church forward. Give members and leaders wisdom to discern your will for the future. Lord, in your mercy, receive our prayer.

Holy One, the earth is yours and all that dwells within it. Care for places and populations damaged or ravaged by land misuse or natural disaster. Quell raging fires. Halt drought and flooding. Lord, in your mercy, receive our prayer.

Holy One, raise up leaders to guide your people. Kindle in them a passion to care for others, a desire to seek the common good, and the courage to love their enemies. May no one deceive or discourage voters. May no one hypocritically represent you. Make elected officials and others with authority do what’s right. Lord, in your mercy, receive our prayer.

Holy One, you bless those who are poor, hungry, and reviled. Give them a way to provide for themselves. Help all who are vulnerable or in crisis to find food, secure housing, gain education or employment and a sense of security. May those who have more than enough support change that empowers those in need. Meet the needs of those on our prayer list who face treatments or surgery, linger in illness or recovery, await deliverance or suffer in sorrow or pain. Lord, in your mercy, receive our prayer.

Holy One, hold us in community with one another. Nurture a spirit of abundant hospitality and intentional inclusion among us, welcoming the gifts of adults, children. and even strangers. Inspire creative visions for our life together. Open our arms, our mouths and doors to proclaim blessings and share burdens. Lord, in your mercy, receive our prayer.

Holy One, we remember in thanksgiving all those who have died. (The names of those who have died the previous year are read and the church bells are tolled.) Wipe away our tears and comfort us with the promise of everlasting life in you with all the saints. Glory to you Lord, in your mercy, receive our prayer.

Accept the prayers of all who cry to you gracious God, the tears of those who don’t know you yet, and the unheard unspoken needs only you know; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

CLOSING HYMN     For All the Saints     #174

4   Oh, blest communion, fellowship divine,
we feebly struggle, they in glory shine;
yet all are one within your great design.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

5   And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long,
steals on the ear the distant triumph song,
and hearts are brave again and arms are strong.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

6   The golden evening brightens in the west;
soon, soon to faithful warriors comes their rest;
sweet is the calm of paradise the blest.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

7   But then there breaks a yet more glorious day:
the saints triumphant rise in bright array;
the King of glory passes on his way.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

8   From earth’s wide bounds, from ocean’s farthest coast,
through gates of pearl streams in the countless host,
singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost:
Alleluia! Alleluia!
