CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS     Page 56

ENTRANCE HYMN     All People That on Earth Do Dwell     #245

1   All people that on earth do dwell,
sing to the Lord with cheerful voice;
him serve with mirth, his praise forth tell;
come ye before him and rejoice.

2   Know that the Lord is God indeed;
without our aid he did us make.
We are his folk, he doth us feed,
and for his sheep he doth us take.

3   Oh, enter then his gates with praise;
approach with joy his courts unto;
praise, laud, and bless his name always,
for it is seemly so to do.

4   For why? The Lord our God is good:
His mercy is forever sure;
his truth at all times firmly stood,
and shall from age to age endure.

5   To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
the God whom heav’n and earth adore,
from us and from the angel host
be praise and glory evermore.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Holy God, our righteous judge, daily your mercy surprises us with everlasting forgiveness. Strengthen our hope in you, and grant that all the peoples of the earth may find their glory in you, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

FIRST READING ISAIAH 1:10-18

Hear the word of the Lord, you rulers of Sodom! Listen to the teaching of our God, you people of Gomorrah! What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices? says the Lord; I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fed beasts; I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of goats. When you come to appear before me, who asked this from your hand? Trample my courts no more; bringing offerings is futile; incense is an abomination to me. New moon and sabbath and calling of convocation—I cannot endure solemn assemblies with iniquity. Your new moons and your appointed festivals my soul hates; they have become a burden to me, I am weary of bearing them. When you stretch out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even though you make many prayers, I will not listen; your hands are full of blood. Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil, learn to do good; seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan, plead for the widow. Come now, let us argue it out, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be like snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.

PSALM    32:1-7

Happy are they whose transgressions are forgiven, and whose sin is put away!

Happy are they to whom the Lord imputes no guilt, and in whose spirit there is no guile!

While I held my tongue, my bones withered away, because of my groaning all day long.

For your hand was heavy upon me day and night; my moisture was dried up as in the heat of summer. All the faithful will make their prayers to you in time of trouble.

Then I acknowledged my sin to you, and did not conceal my guilt. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.” Then you forgave me the guilt of my sin.

Therefore, all the faithful will make their prayers to you in time of trouble; when the great waters overflow, they shall not reach them.

You are my hiding-place; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with shouts of deliverance.

All the faithful will make their prayers to you in time of trouble.

SECOND READING 2 THESSALONIANS 1:1-4, 11-12

Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. We must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters, as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing. Therefore we ourselves boast of you among the churches of God for your steadfastness and faith during all your persecutions and the afflictions that you are enduring.
To this end we always pray for you, asking that our God will make you worthy of his call and will fulfill by his power every good resolve and work of faith, so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION     Page 62

GOSPEL     LUKE 19:1-10

[Jesus] entered Jericho and was passing through it. A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was rich. He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way. When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today.” So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him. All who saw it began to grumble and said, “He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner.” Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much.” Then Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost.”

SERMON

HYMN of the DAY     Jerusalem, My Happy Home     #331

1   Jerusalem, my happy home,
when shall I come to thee?
When shall my sorrows have an end?
Thy joys when shall I see?

2   O happy harbor of the saints,
O sweet and pleasant soil!
In thee no sorrow may be found,
no grief, no care, no toil.

3   Thy gardens and thy gallant walks
continually are green;
there grow such sweet and pleasant flow’rs
as nowhere else are seen.

4   There trees forevermore bear fruit
and evermore do spring;
there evermore the angels sit
and evermore do sing.

5   Jerusalem, my happy home,
would God I were in thee!
Would God my woes were at an end,
thy joys that I might see!

PRAYERS of INTERCESSION

In gratitude and humility, let us join together in prayer on behalf of all God’s creation. A brief silence.
Almighty God, keep the church steadfast in your word. Deepen our faith and increase our love in Jesus’ name. Further ecumenical dialogue and partnerships. Equip us for unified witness and service in the world. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Almighty God, come to the aid of the lost, poor, and needy, especially those suffering from lack. Give food, water and homes to those suffering disasters. Halt the exploitation of earth’s resources. Lead us to seek justice and rescue the oppressed. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Almighty God, guide leaders of all nations. Heal divisions, build trust, and remove barriers that prevent trust, collaboration and cooperation. Bring children, youth, adults, neighborhoods, cities, and countries together to work for the common good. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Almighty God, save from trouble those who struggle with hunger, homelessness, or addiction. Strengthen the overworked and give hope to those who do not have enough work. Console those who are burdened by illness or grief (especially those on our prayer list). Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Almighty God, reveal yourself to all who seek you. Empower the hospitality of this congregation to welcome others. Foster generosity in stewardship ministries of our congregation and community. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Almighty God, gather us with the faithful at your eternal banquet table. We give thanks for those who witnessed your gracious presence and invited us to do the same, especially Scott Harman, Martin Luther and all who strive to reform and renew the church. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

Almighty God, it is with grateful humble hearts we commend our spoken and silent prayers to you through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

CLOSING HYMN     A Mighty Fortress Is Our God     #229

1   A mighty fortress is our God,
a sword and shield victorious;
he breaks the cruel oppressor’s rod
and wins salvation glorious.
The old satanic foe
has sworn to work us woe!
With craft and dreadful might
he arms himself to fight.
On earth he has no equal.

2   No strength of ours can match his might!
We would be lost, rejected.
But now a champion comes to fight,
whom God himself elected.
You ask who this may be?
The Lord of hosts is he!
Christ Jesus, mighty Lord,
God’s only Son, adored.
He holds the field victorious.

3   Though hordes of devils fill the land
all threat’ning to devour us,
we tremble not, unmoved we stand;
they cannot overpow’r us.
Let this world’s tyrant rage;
in battle we’ll engage!
His might is doomed to fail;
God’s judgment must prevail!
One little word subdues him.

4   God’s Word forever shall abide,
no thanks to foes, who fear it;
for God himself fights by our side
with weapons of the Spirit.
Were they to take our house,
goods, honor, child, or spouse,
though life be wrenched away,
they cannot win the day.
The kingdom’s ours forever!

WE GIVE THANKS FOR ALL

On All Saints’ Sunday, November 6, 2022, we will give thanks to God for all His saints and honor the memory of loved ones who have died this year. As a member and friend, please invite others to join us during one of two services offered.

Names will be read aloud during each morning service. After remembering loved ones through the spoken word, the church bell will sound with three-fold purpose: to meditate upon our common humanity, our own mortality and our humble place before God. We will be united once again with loved ones through echoing sounds that represent our ongoing connections.

They look for communities who need help, but don’t make the headline news or have adequate resources. Check out floridacbf.org.

You can also mail a check payable to CBF Florida and mail it to:

Thank you for your prayerful consideration.

Lutheran Books of Worship have been placed in the front of each church for you to own. Take as many as you need so there’ll be no reason not to fully participate as you watch online.
