ENTRANCE HYMN     When Peace, Like a River     #346

1   When peace, like a river, attendeth my way;
when sorrows, like sea billows, roll;
whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say,
it is well, it is well with my soul.

2   Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
let this blest assurance control,
that Christ hath regarded my helpless estate,
and hath shed his own blood for my soul.

3   He lives–oh, the bliss of this glorious thought;
my sin, not in part, but the whole,
is nailed to his cross and I bear it no more.
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

4   And Lord, haste the day when our faith shall be sight,
the clouds be rolled back as a scroll,
the trumpet shall sound and the Lord shall descend;
even so it is well with my soul.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

God among us, we gather in the name of your Son to learn love for one another. Keep our feet from evil paths. Turn our minds to your wisdom and our hearts to the grace revealed in your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

FIRST READING     AMOS 8:4-7

Hear this, you that trample on the needy, and bring to ruin the poor of the land, saying, “When will the new moon be over so that we may sell grain; and the sabbath, so that we may offer wheat for sale? We will make the ephah small and the shekel great, and practice deceit with false balances, buying the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals, and selling the sweepings of the wheat.” The Lord has sworn by the pride of Jacob: Surely I will never forget any of their deeds.

PSALM     113

Hallelujah! Give praise, you servants of the Lord; praise the name of the Lord

Let the name of the Lord be blessed, from this time forth forevermore.

From the rising of the sun to its going down let the name of the Lord be praised.

The Lord is high above all nations; God’s glory above the heavens. The Lord lifts up the poor from the ashes.

Who is like the Lord our God, who sits enthroned on high,

but stoops to behold the heavens and the earth?

The Lord takes up the weak out of the dust and lifts up the poor from the ashes,

enthroning them with the rulers, with the rulers of the people.

The Lord makes the woman of a childless house to be a joyful mother of children. Hallelujah!

The Lord lifts up the poor from the ashes.

SECOND READING     1 TIMOTHY 2:1-7

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity. This is right and is acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God; there is also one mediator between God and humankind, Christ Jesus, himself human, who gave himself a ransom for all—this was attested at the right time. For this I was appointed a herald and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION     Page 62

GOSPEL     LUKE 16:1-13

Then Jesus said to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was squandering his property. So he summoned him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear about you? Give me an accounting of your management, because you cannot be my manager any longer.’ Then the manager said to himself, ‘What will I do, now that my master is taking the position away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. I have decided what to do so that, when I am dismissed as manager, people may welcome me into their homes.’ So, summoning his master’s debtors one by one, he asked the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ He answered, ‘A hundred jugs of olive oil.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it fifty.’ Then he asked another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ He replied, ‘A hundred containers of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill and make it eighty.’ And his master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the children of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light. And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth so that when it is gone, they may welcome you into the eternal homes. “Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much. If then you have not been faithful with the dishonest wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you what is your own? No slave can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.”

SERMON

HYMN of the DAY     Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound     #448

1   Amazing grace, how sweet the sound,
that saved a wretch like me!<
I once was lost, but now am found;
was blind, but now I see.

2   ’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
and grace my fears relieved;
how precious did that grace appear
the hour I first believed!

3   Through many dangers, toils, and snares
I have already come;
’tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
and grace will lead me home.

4   The Lord has promised good to me;
his word my hope secures;
he will my shield and portion be
as long as life endures.

PRAYERS of INTERCESSION

As grains of wheat become flour, then bread, gather our prayers for the church, those in need, and all of creation. Add to our most basic ingredients, stir us up and make us into one. A brief silence.

God our Savior, give your church faith and truth. Enlighten and embolden all those who share your good news with the world. God of grace, hear our prayer.

Divine teacher, instruct your children to be responsible stewards of creation. Show us how best to care for the earth and its resources, and guide those who work to develop sustainable practices. God of grace, hear our prayer.

Ruler of the nations, direct those in authority. Give leaders wisdom and compassion so that all may live in peace. Inspire public servants to follow the example of courageous leaders and safeguard the dignity of each person. God of grace, hear our prayer.

Helper of the needy, lift up those on our prayer list and all who are oppressed. Breathe justice into economic and social systems that perpetuate poverty and hunger. Sustain food ministries, clothing banks, and emergency shelters. Make your presence known to anyone suffering. God of grace, hear our prayer.

Sustainer and giver of life, bless this congregation with abundance. Instruct us in the proper and faithful use of wealth and resources so we share generously and forgive debt when possible. God of grace, hear our prayer.

God of glory, you wish that all would be saved. Thank you for the life of Stephen Klaboe and for his perseverance to endure, adapt and maintain a sense of self.  Keep us thankful for the witness of those who have go before us and bring us with them to a heavenly feast full of joy with no end. God of grace, hear our prayer.

Gathered together in the sweet communion of the Holy Spirit, we offer these and all our prayers to you, gracious God, through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

CLOSING HYMN     Let All Things Now Living     #557

1 Let all things now living<
a song of thanksgiving
to God the creator triumphantly raise,
who fashioned and made us,
protected and stayed us,
who still guides us on to the end of our days.
God’s banners are o’er us,
His light goes before us,
a pillar of fire shining forth in the night,
till shadows have vanished
and darkness is banished,
as forward we travel from light into light.

2   His law he enforces:
the stars in their courses
and sun in its orbit obediently shine;
the hills and the mountains,
the rivers and fountains,
the deeps of the ocean proclaim him divine.
We too should be voicing
our love and rejoicing;
with glad adoration a song let us raise
till all things now living
unite in thanksgiving:
“To God in the highest, hosanna and praise!”

HELP NEEDED

School kits will be assembled at 3:00 PM today at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Pavilion (The Hill Church), Berrysburg. Volunteers needed and appreciated!

PERSONAL CARE KITS

When natural disasters strike or war drives families from their homes, as we see over and over in the news, our hearts ache with compassion.  But what can we do? Making Lutheran World Relief (LWR) kits is a simple, tangible way to offer comfort to those suffering and express love to our neighbors in need.

Messiah ladies are again collecting personal care kits to be shipped to and distributed by Lutheran World Relief.   These kits provide the basic needs for personal hygiene.

Each kit includes the following items:

  • One light weight bath-size towel (52X27”), dark colors are recommended
  • 2 bars of bath-size soap (4-5oz each)
  • 1 adult toothbrush in the original packaging, or sealed in a business envelope—no plastic wrap
  • 1 study comb
  • 1 metal nail clipper

Please consider purchasing the needed items for one or more kits.  There are baskets at the front of the church for each item—no need to remove tags or wrappings. Please have your kit items to the church by September 18th.  We will be assembling the kits September 25th during the adult Sunday School hour. Thank you for participating in this LWR ministry!

SEEKING FEMALE COMPANIONSHIP

Don’t worry. It’s not what you think. The Weaver family is searching for a companion – preferably female- who’s willing to spend a few occasional Saturday hours (from 3-8 PM) with Betsy’s 91 year old mother. Another possibility would be to stay with her for a day, here and there. The pay is hourly. Betsy’s mom has pretty substantial vision, hearing and short-term memory loss. She manages to get around with a cane, play games, and perform activities of daily living somewhat independently and better with assistance. Please contact Betsy by email at pweaver168@comcast.net or phone call (717- 896-9128). Please leave a voice message if no answer.
